Cultural Center

A monumental legacy of the socialist regime

Architecture

The Cultural Center (former House of Culture) was built between 1946 and 1950 by architect Vera Lukanska. In terms of aesthetic and artistic value, it represents one of the most significant buildings in Dimitrovgrad. The location itself emphasizes the significance of the building, in urban, cultural and social terms. In fact, the building was elevated in comparison to the surrounding area, emphasizing its monumentality.

The architectural design in the style of European modernism, with a dominant pink color, corresponds to both the purpose and the time in which it was created, i.e. in the years after World War II during the socialist regime.

Restoration projects

The building was partly restored in the period 2019-2022, including the complete replacement of the roof, façade, installation and carpentry for the purpose of improving its energy efficiency. The large hall of the cultural center was completely reconstructed: the technical equipment, seats, lighting, and wall coverings were replaced. Its interior therefore got a completely new look. The only detail that has been retained is the interior frieze around the perimeter of the hall with plaster motifs depicting the labor movement and the national liberation struggle. A future restoration project regards the small hall and the front façade of the Cultural Center.
