The former OND building: controlling people’s state of mind

With the foundation of the Opera Nazionale Dopolavoro (fascist leisure and recreational organization), the Fascist Party was increasingly able to penetrate civil society, reducing the room to manoeuvre of those who opposed the regime. The OND offered real and concrete services to the population which thus tended to oppose the regime increasingly rarely. At the same time, this was a way to keep control on the state of mind of the population.

Cesena’s OND building (OND community centre) was built right in front of the sugar factory Eridiana to be used by its workers. It included a large hall for meetings and film screenings. On the right of the great hall, there was a library, the office of the President and the film booth. On the left there was a bar room, the changing rooms as well as bathrooms. A glass tower with the staircase leads to the roof terrace. Built on private ground belonging to the Eridania company, it was surrounded by a large garden area with a tennis court, a bowling area and a dance floor.

The building in rationalist style is extremely modern for this period in terms of forms and internal distribution. It is constructed around a main body (the hall) on two lower symmetrical blocks. On the side of the street, a portico frames the entrance giving shadow, while on the other side the stair tower stands out. Other elements of modernity are the sunroof, the horizontal cut of the windows and the soaring glass tower. After the war, the building was subject to some changes regarding the cut of the windows and the distribution of the spaces. Today, the building is abandoned and in a deplorable state.
